The journey through a fascinating world full of splendor and preciousness begins in the only gem mine in Europe that is open for inspection, the gem mines in the Steinkaulenberg in Idar-Oberstein.

The visitor tunnels are illuminated by spotlights. So you can not only see  beautiful agates, but also glittering rock crystals, amethysts, smoky quartz, calcite and others. like. You feel like you are in a fairytale cave.

Expert guides explain the evolution of the gemstones. A visit to the historic mine - located in the middle of a nature reserve - will be an unforgettable experience for everyone. The visitor mine can be visited in normal street clothes. A protective helmet is provided. Inside the mountain, the paths are laid out without steps and slides. At the gem camp treasure hunters can try their very best to dig for the coveted gems. Very nice pieces of agate, amethyst, smoky quartz etc. have often been found.

The mining fields- primarily intended for children and adolescents - are filled with minerals and precious stones from all over the world every day. Advance registration required! Registration with the management.

Important: The forest path to the gemstone mine has varying elevations that can be challenging for wheelchair users. An accompanying person is recommended to ensure safer navigation on the uneven section. Inside the mine, the paths are paved, which significantly improves accessibility for wheelchair users. Please allow approximately 15 minutes for the walk from the parking lot to our kiosk. From the parking lot, head towards the forest. At the highest point (approximately 100 meters from the parking lot), a path leads off to the left (Geological Trail). Follow this path, and you will reach our office after 300 meters. For wheelchair users: The path is paved but includes some inclines. Please take this into account.
